17 Car Games You Can Play Without a Phone

Dead battery, no signal, or a car rule about screens — you don't need a phone to play. These are the games that have been keeping backseats busy since long before anyone had one.

Spotting games

Everything you need is out the window.

  • The Alphabet Game — A to Z on road signs.
  • License plate states — call them out as you see them.
  • Count the cows — one side of the car versus the other; a cemetery resets your count to zero.
  • Padiddle — first person to spot a car with one headlight out.
  • Rainbow car hunt — find a car in every color of the rainbow, in order.

Talking games

No props, no scorekeeping, no arguments about the rules.

  • Twenty Questions — yes or no answers only.
  • Story builder — each person adds one sentence.
  • Word chain — each word starts with the last letter of the previous one.
  • Two truths and a lie.
  • Would you rather.
  • The movie game — name an actor from the last movie mentioned.

When you want a scoreboard back

Most of these classics have a version here that keeps score for you, so nobody has to remember who's winning. Same games, less arguing.
