Hour by hour
Hours 1–2 are free — everyone is excited. Save your best material. Hours 3–5 are where trips fall apart, so that's when games matter most. After a real stop, hours 6+ run on snacks, music, and low-effort conversation games.
Stop before you need to
A ten-minute stop every two hours costs less time than a forty-minute meltdown. Pick stops with somewhere to run: a rest area with grass beats a gas station every time.
What to pack in reach
Keep one bag in the front seat, not the trunk.
- Water and low-sugar snacks
- Wipes and a spare plastic bag
- A charging cable per device, plus a spare
- One surprise item per kid, revealed at hour 4
Set the phone rules before you leave
Decide screen time before the car starts, not after the first argument. A common setup: games and music for everyone in the first half, headphones and quiet time in the second.
